How PrEP correlates with alcohol or wrong beliefs that stop men who have sex with men to use PrEP - picture 1

PrEP is one of the strongest ways of HIV prevention, just like condoms. Regular PrEP intake shows 90% efficiency of protection against HIV. However, a lot of people refrain from PrEP, because the efficiency of PrEP intake depends on the regularity of medicines intake. Other people have some suspicions like the way PrEP correlates with alcohol.

To find the correlations between PrEP and alcohol more than 270 men who have sex with men participated at a large Gay Pride event in Atlanta. All the participant had different demographic characteristics, practised different sexual behaviour and used to drink or do not to drink alcohol. All the participants had HIV-negative status and used PrEP to prevent HIV transmission.

In summary, we can see that some men were not taking PrEP before drinking alcohol because they deem it may cause liver damage. Other people just forget to take their pills because of alcohol inebriation. The other individuals practice unprotected anal sex because of alcohol inebriation. The main thing is that these factors work simultaneously, not one after another, all these factors are connected and may lead to declines in a statistical efficiency of PrEP as an HIV preventative measure.
