Work underway to assist Ukrainian people with continued access to HIV treatment

Work underway to assist Ukrainian people with continued access to HIV treatment - picture 1

Amid the conflict in Ukraine, people are experiencing difficulties accessing HIV treatment, care and related services. Many organisations, including NGOs, have mobilised with the goal of ensuring uninterrupted access to antiretroviral therapy for all who need it.

Life4me+ has been providing assistance and support to people who have encountered problems accessing treatment. In the past few days, we have handled more than 15 appeals from people living with HIV both in Ukraine and those who are outside the country and cannot return.

An official UNAIDS press release states that the conflict has affected everyone in Ukraine, and it has made things especially difficult for people living with HIV and key population groups - such as men who have sex with men, people who use drugs, and transgender people.

Winnie Byanyima, UNAIDS Executive Director, said:

“People living with HIV in Ukraine only have a few weeks of antiretroviral therapy remaining with them, and without continuous access their lives are at risk,”

“The hundreds of thousands of people living with and affected by HIV in Ukraine must have unbroken access to life-saving HIV services, including HIV prevention, testing and treatment.”
